President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026 into law, ushering in fresh changes to Nigeria’s electoral framework just days after the 2027 election timetable was unveiled.

The signing took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja around 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, in the presence of principal officers of the National Assembly. The amended legislation had been passed by lawmakers a day earlier.

The development comes shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission released the schedule for the 2027 general elections, formally setting the stage for political activities ahead of the nationwide polls.

At the centre of the amendment is the highly debated issue of electronic transmission of election results. In recent weeks, civil society organisations and opposition figures staged protests at the National Assembly, calling for compulsory real-time transmission of results from polling units to INEC’s central database.

Supporters of mandatory live transmission argue that it would reduce manipulation and enhance public confidence in the electoral process. However, the ruling All Progressives Congress and other stakeholders have expressed concerns about network limitations in remote areas, advocating a more flexible approach that permits manual collation where electronic transmission is impracticable.

The debate has also revived memories of the 2023 elections, when technical glitches affecting INEC’s Results Viewing Portal sparked allegations of irregularities and heightened public scrutiny of the electoral system.

Under the already announced timetable, presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections will hold on March 6, 2027.

Further details are expected as political actors, civil society groups, and electoral stakeholders examine the implications of the new amendments.
