BREAKING: Tyre failure, not speed, caused Anthony Joshua’s accident – Ogun Police
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that a tyre burst caused the fatal road accident involving British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, resulted in the death of two members of the boxer’s team, while Joshua sustained minor injuries.
Speaking at the Police Command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the accident happened after the Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle conveying Joshua and his team suffered a sudden tyre burst.
According to him, the tyre failure caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which subsequently rammed into a stationary truck along the expressway.
“The accident was caused by a tyre burst. The vehicle lost control and collided with a stationary truck,” Babaseyi said.
He confirmed that two occupants of the vehicle died as a result of the crash and were later identified as Joshua’s strength coach, Sina Ghami, and his personal trainer, Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.
Joshua, who was seated in the vehicle at the time of the accident, sustained minor injuries and was promptly rescued alongside the driver. The boxer was taken to a medical facility in Lagos, where he received treatment and is currently said to be in stable condition.
The police spokesman added that investigations were ongoing to fully establish all circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
The tragic accident has continued to draw nationwide attention, with fans, sports stakeholders and public figures expressing condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing Joshua a speedy recovery.
