BREAKING: Wike’s ally Chinda dumps PDP after clinching APC guber ticket
The Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday announced the defection of House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
Following the announcement, Chinda formally resigned from his position as Minority Leader of the House. The defection letter, which was read on the floor of the chamber, was dated April 23, 2026.
Chinda, a close ally of Nyesom Wike, recently emerged as the APC governorship candidate for Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections after Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Tonye Cole and George Kelly withdrew from the race.
The House also recorded several other defections during plenary.
Representatives Anthony Adebayo Adepoju, Adedeji Stanley Olajide, Makanjuola Sunday Ojo, Najimdeen Oyeshina Oyedeji, Folajimi Oyekunle, Abass Adekunle Adigun and Auwalu Abdu Gwalabe all defected from the PDP to the Allied Peoples Movement.
Meanwhile, Etanabene Benedict, representing Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency of Delta State, left the Labour Party and joined the PDP.
The wave of defections marks another significant shift in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties intensifying efforts to strengthen their positions across the country.
