Court sentence man to life imprisonment for raping daughter in Cross River

A High Court sitting in Calabar has sentenced a 46-year-old man, Imeh Sunday, to life imprisonment for raping his biological daughter, in a judgment that underscores the judiciary’s firm stance against sexual violence and abuse of minors.

The conviction followed a full trial before Justice Blessing Egwu of Family Court 2 in Cross River State, where the defendant faced charges bordering on incestuous rape. Delivering judgment on Wednesday, the court held that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt, relying on what it described as overwhelming and credible evidence.

Justice Egwu subsequently imposed the maximum penalty prescribed by law, bringing closure to a case that has drawn public concern over the safety of vulnerable children within domestic environments.

The prosecution was led by the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), a non-governmental organisation committed to the protection of children and vulnerable persons. Reacting to the verdict, the organisation’s Principal Counsel, James Ibor, commended the survivor for her courage in pursuing justice despite the trauma endured.

He also acknowledged the roles played by the survivor’s guardians, the Cross River State Ministry of Justice, the police, and members of the judiciary, describing the conviction as a collective effort in the fight against sexual and gender-based violence.

“This judgment reflects the strength of the survivor and the commitment of all stakeholders who ensured that justice was served,” he said.

The organisation disclosed that the conviction marks the fourth rape-related judgment it has secured in Cross River State within the past four months, highlighting ongoing efforts to tackle abuse and strengthen accountability mechanisms.

The case adds to growing calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting minors and increased public awareness to combat sexual violence across the country.
