Dele Momodu formally joins ADC in Benin

Former presidential candidate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dele Momodu, is set to formally defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Thursday, January 15, 2026, marking another significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition political landscape.

Momodu, a close ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, is among leading opposition figures pushing for the formation of a broad coalition ahead of the 2027 general election, with the aim of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

His official declaration will take place in Benin City, Edo State, at the newly established ADC State Secretariat, where top party officials and prominent political stakeholders are expected to attend.

Speaking on Wednesday, the publisher of Ovation Magazine described his decision to join the ADC as a “homecoming,” urging Nigerians to rally behind what he characterised as a collective effort to rescue the nation’s democracy.

According to him, the opposition must overcome internal divisions if it hopes to pose a credible challenge in 2027, stressing that a fragmented front would only strengthen the position of the incumbent administration.

Momodu disclosed that respected political figures, including former APC National Chairman John Oyegun and ex-federal lawmaker Yisa Braimoh, are expected at the event. He also revealed plans to return to his community after the declaration to celebrate with supporters.

He warned Nigerians against what he described as the gradual slide towards one-man rule, calling on citizens across party lines to unite in defence of democracy.

Momodu insisted that his defection was motivated by national interest rather than personal ambition, adding that the responsibility of safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic ideals must be shared by all patriots, regardless of political affiliation.
