Drama in Court as El-Rufai mentions ADC convention during trial

There was mild drama on Monday at the Kaduna State High Court as former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was overheard discussing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention scheduled for Tuesday.

El-Rufai, who appeared in court over corruption-related allegations, was seen arriving in a white babbanriga with an ash-coloured cap, walking into the courtroom alongside his legal team and one of his wives.

As he made his way in, he was briefly heard speaking with a loyalist, asking: “So tomorrow is the Convention, right?” to which the aide responded, “God’s willing.”

The remark drew quiet attention from onlookers, coming at a time when the ADC has insisted it will proceed with its planned convention despite warnings reportedly issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

El-Rufai is currently standing trial alongside one Amadu Sule on charges including abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage. The case is being prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Security presence was heavy around the court premises, with restricted movement and tight surveillance along access roads.

The ADC has dismissed the charges against the former governor as politically motivated, describing the proceedings as a witch-hunt targeting opposition figures.

The case is expected to continue as separate hearings also proceed at the Federal High Court in Kaduna over related applications involving bail and arraignment matters.
