EFCC declares ex-Pension Task Team chairman Maina wanted
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared the former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Abdullahi Maina, wanted.
The anti-graft agency announced the development in a statement posted on its verified X handle on Wednesday and signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.
The commission urged members of the public with information about Maina’s whereabouts to provide such information to the appropriate authorities.
Maina has been linked to a multi-billion-naira pension fraud case and has faced several legal proceedings over alleged financial crimes.
In November 2021, the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Maina of money laundering offences involving more than N2 billion.
The conviction followed his arraignment by the EFCC in October 2019 on a 12-count charge, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Maina subsequently served a prison sentence at the Kuje Correctional Centre following his conviction.
He was later released from the correctional facility after serving the sentence arising from the pension-related fraud case.
The former PRTT chairman’s legal troubles have continued to attract public attention, with his case involving allegations concerning the handling of pension funds.
His latest declaration as wanted by the EFCC marks a fresh development in the long-running case.
The commission’s announcement did not provide further details in the statement on the specific circumstances leading to the latest wanted declaration or whether it relates directly to the earlier conviction.
Maina served as chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, an initiative that was involved in efforts to recover funds linked to pension administration before his removal from the position.
The EFCC has continued to pursue cases involving alleged financial crimes and money laundering, with the Maina case remaining one of the high-profile pension-related cases handled by the commission.
