EXCLUSIVE: Obi, Kwankwaso plot defection from ADC as Obasanjo brokers OK alliance

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, are reportedly exploring fresh political options outside the African Democratic Congress (ADC), amid growing tensions over zoning arrangements, internal power balance, and the future of the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to multiple party sources and political insiders, discussions have intensified in recent days over the possibility of both figures aligning with a new political platform, following unresolved disagreements within the ADC bloc on how to structure its presidential ticket.

The development comes just days after a high-level opposition summit held in Ibadan, where key political actors reportedly agreed on the need to present a single presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027, but failed to reach a consensus on zoning the ticket between the North and South.

A report by Very Nigerian last week also indicated that Obi was visibly unsettled after attending the Ibadan meeting, where participants agreed on a united front but left the zoning question unresolved.

The report suggested that Obi’s camp expressed concerns over what it described as a lack of clarity on rotational principles within the emerging coalition.

Meanwhile, political sources further allege that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is playing a quiet but strategic role in ongoing consultations, reportedly encouraging both Obi and Kwankwaso to consider a joint arrangement that could strengthen opposition chances in 2027.

Although no formal confirmation has been made by the key actors involved, speculation within political circles suggests that both Obi and Kwankwaso could be weighing options between emerging platforms, including the possibility of aligning with either the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) or a lesser-known but developing platform identified as the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), as discussions around coalition restructuring continue.

Party stakeholders, however, have maintained official silence, with many describing the situation as “fluid” and subject to ongoing negotiations among opposition leaders.

For now, neither Obi nor Kwankwaso has publicly confirmed any intention to leave the ADC or join another platform.

The situation is clear: both will deputise for each other, whether now or in 2031. Kwankwaso will contest for the presidency in 2031, and he’ll ask Obi to deputise for him—just as Obi is asking Kwankwaso to deputise for him now. I hope that when Kwankwaso seeks Obi’s support in 2031, Obi will return the same respect Kwankwaso will shows him in the 2027 election, where he may serve as his running mate. Whether it’s KO or OK, both scenarios could happen at different times. Nigeria will be OK…, KO?
