EXCLUSIVE: Rainbow Coalition emerges in Ogun Central as Iyabo Obasanjo moves to back Peter Obi
A political realignment is taking shape in Ogun Central ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said to be moving towards endorsing Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Sources Told Very Nigerian.
Iyabo Obasanjo, who is seeking the Ogun Central senatorial seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is said to be considering an alliance with Obi as political consultations intensify ahead of the elections.
However, the proposed alignment could complicate the political fortunes of Hon. Rotimi George Taylo, the NDC candidate for the Ogun Central senatorial seat.
Under the reported arrangement, Obi’s supporters could be encouraged to vote for Iyabo Obasanjo in the senatorial election in exchange for her support for Obi’s presidential ambition.
Such a deal could create a difficult situation for Taylo, who is seeking the same senatorial seat on the NDC platform.
If Obi’s supporters follow the proposed arrangement, some could back Obasanjo instead of the party’s senatorial candidate.
The development would represent a form of cross-party political cooperation in which support for a presidential candidate is exchanged for backing a candidate from another party in a legislative contest.
The proposed alignment also reflects the growing influence of political coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections, as politicians seek partnerships beyond their respective party structures.
Very Nigerian gathered from reliable sources that an announcement is expected soon.
Similar cross-party arrangements have been associated with the political strategy of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, whose alliances have brought politicians from different parties together around shared electoral interests.
However, it remains unclear whether Iyabo Obasanjo and Obi have reached a formal agreement or whether the reported arrangement has received the backing of their respective political parties.
If announced, proposed alliance could become a significant factor in the Ogun Central senatorial contest, particularly given the possibility of competing political interests between Obasanjo and Taylo.
The development underscores the potential challenges facing political parties when supporters of a popular presidential candidate are encouraged to support a candidate from another party in a separate election.
