Exclusive: Zamfara governor Dauda Lawal, cabinet plots defection to APC
A defection by Lawal would represent a major shift in Zamfara, currently governed by the PDP.
Political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections appear to be gathering momentum, as Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal Dare, reportedly held an emergency meeting with members of his cabinet and key stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party late on Thursday night.
Sources familiar with the meeting described it as a strategic consultation aimed at reviewing the political direction of the state and the governor’s future political plans ahead of the next election cycle.
Insiders disclosed that after extensive deliberations, participants at the meeting allegedly advised the governor to consider defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress as political alignments intensify nationwide ahead of 2027.
Although details of the discussions remain closely guarded, there has been no official confirmation from the Zamfara State Government or the governor’s media office regarding the outcome of the meeting as of press time.
The governor is widely regarded as an ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and was believed to be among the early supporters of the emerging ADC coalition.
However, any move to the APC could present political complications, as his predecessor, Bello Matawalle, is currently a dominant figure and leader of the party in Zamfara State.
If confirmed, a possible defection by Lawal would represent a significant political shift in Zamfara, where the PDP presently controls the state government.
