Fed Govt arraigns coup plotters
The arraignment of alleged coup plotters commenced on Wednesday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, leading the prosecution.
All the defendants were present in court except former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, who was reported to be at large.
The defendants are facing charges bordering on alleged conspiracy to overthrow the government and other related offences.
However, proceedings were briefly halted after the court stood down the arraignment to enable the provision of an interpreter for the sixth defendant, Sheikh Abdulkadir Sani, who, according to his counsel, understands only Hausa and Arabic.
The court was informed that the interpretation was necessary to ensure that the defendant fully comprehends the charges against him and can participate meaningfully in the proceedings.
Justice Abdulmalik subsequently adjourned briefly to allow court officials make arrangements for the interpreter before the arraignment continues.
The case has drawn significant public attention, given the gravity of the allegations and the high-profile nature of some of the defendants involved.
