Ghana renames International Airport in Accra
The Ghanaian government has announced plans to change the name of the country’s main airport in the capital from Kotoka International Airport to its original name, Accra International Airport.
In a statement, the Ministry of Transport said the decision would be implemented through a systematic update of official documents and other related materials.
According to the ministry, the process will include changes to statutory instruments where necessary, airport signage, aviation publications and digital platforms.
“The government has considered it appropriate to restore the airport to its former and internationally recognised name,” the statement said.
The original name, Accra International Airport (ACC), has remained the official designation in the documents of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the statement said.
The airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in 1969 to honor Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, who was murdered in a failed coup attempt in 1967 at a location which now serves as the forecourt of the airport.(Xinhua/NAN)
