Former National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and President of the Congress of African Journalists (CAJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of seven journalists in a fatal road accident in Gombe State.

In a condolence message issued on Monday, Isiguzo described the incident as a dark and painful moment for the journalism profession, noting that the tragedy struck at the heart of the NUJ family.

He said the loss was even more heartbreaking because the deceased journalists were members of the Gombe State Council of the NUJ, the home council of the incumbent National President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi.

Isiguzo extended his heartfelt condolences to the NUJ National President, the national leadership of the Union, the Gombe State Council, as well as the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased journalists.

He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries in the accident.

“These were dedicated journalists who travelled to honour a colleague and returned no more,” Isiguzo said, describing their deaths as a painful loss not only to their families and the NUJ, but to the entire journalism fraternity in Nigeria and across Africa.

The CAJ President called on members of the NUJ nationwide to remain united in solidarity and compassion during the period of mourning, urging journalists to draw strength from one another.

“Our hearts are broken, but our collective spirit remains unbowed,” he said, while praying that God grants the leadership of the Union strength and comfort, and eternal rest to the souls of the departed.

The seven journalists were confirmed dead by the Federal Road Safety Corps following a lone accident involving an NUJ bus in Gombe State. The victims were reportedly returning from a wedding ceremony when the tragic incident occurred.

The accident has continued to attract widespread sympathy and tributes from media organisations, professional bodies, and stakeholders within and outside Nigeria.
