The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, on Sunday visited security formations in Gwarzo, Shanono and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas of Kano North Senatorial District, where troops have been deployed to check bandit incursions from neighbouring states.

The visit came after recent bandit attacks in parts of the three local government areas, which led to the deployment of joint security forces made up of the military, police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, following a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

A statement issued by the Senator’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, said Barau arrived in Kano at about 7 a.m. and went straight to Lakwaya Ward in Gwarzo Local Government Area. There, he met and interacted with troops stationed at the security camp, commending their efforts and encouraging them in their task of restoring peace to the affected communities.

Accompanied by the Garrison Commander, 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Kano, Lt. Col. I. Ekoh, and other senior security officers, the Deputy Senate President inspected a parade mounted by the troops and led by the JTF Commander in Gwarzo, Lt. Abdullahi Sadiq.

Addressing the operatives after the inspection, Barau, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, commended them for their commitment to protecting lives and property.

“Thank you very much for your efforts to safeguard the lives and property of our people. We thank Mr President, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for swiftly acting on our request,” he said.

“He took it upon himself to inform the Chief of Defence Staff, down to the Chief of Army Staff, the IGP and all the security agencies, including the Director-General of DSS, which culminated in your posting to this area.

“Since you arrived in this area, you have been doing all you can to restore peace and tranquillity to our people. I’m here to thank you for putting your lives on the line to ensure our people live in peace and tranquillity. On behalf of the people of this area, and Kano State at large, we thank you for your efforts to safeguard the lives of our people,” he added.

Urging the troops to sustain the momentum, Barau said, “Please go after these people who don’t want peace in our land, the bandits who are terrorising our people. Chase them wherever they are and flush them out of this area, and indeed the entire area. We are hopeful you will be able to do so.”

He also appealed to residents of the affected communities to give maximum support and cooperation to security agencies, noting that community collaboration was critical to restoring lasting peace.

From Lakwaya, the Deputy Senate President visited additional troops’ camps in Tsaure and Faruruwa wards of Shanono LGA, as well as the camp in Tsanyawa LGA, where he addressed security personnel at each location.

During a meeting with community leaders in Faruruwa Ward, Shanono LGA, residents expressed appreciation for the deployment of troops and the intervention of the Federal Government.

An elder statesman, Alhaji Yahaya Bagobiri, thanked the authorities for the security presence, ongoing road projects and appointments of indigenes, including the Chief of Staff to the Deputy Senate President.

A former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, described the visit as a morale booster for security operatives and praised Senator Barau for his “consistent and decisive role” in addressing security challenges in the area.

Responding, Barau said the visit was necessitated by the recent bandits’ incursions.

“May Allah protect us and prevent any future occurrence of such incidents. I’m also here to engage directly with our gallant security personnel; to see them, listen to them, and discuss the situation on the ground,” he said.

He also announced that, in response to community requests, a dam would be constructed as soon as possible.

Members of the Deputy Senate President’s entourage included the APC Secretary in Kano State, Ibrahim Zakari Sarina, and other senior party officials.
