The Chairman of the Accord Party in Osun State, Asimiyu Ajibola, is receiving treatment at the University of Osun Teaching Hospital after surviving a gun attack in Osogbo.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command had launched a full-scale investigation into the shooting.

According to the police, the attack occurred at about 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday in the MDS area of Osogbo when two armed men riding on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on Ajibola in what investigators suspect was an assassination attempt.

The police said tactical and conventional teams were immediately deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call.

Officers subsequently evacuated the victim to a medical facility, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

“Medical personnel have confirmed that Hon. Ajibola is in a stable condition and responding positively to treatment,” the statement said.

The command disclosed that an intensive manhunt has been launched to track down the attackers, who fled the scene after the shooting.

Investigators also recovered exhibits from the area, which have been sent for forensic examination as part of efforts to identify those responsible.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and directed a high-level investigation into the incident.

According to the police, all relevant investigative units have been ordered to deploy available resources to uncover the circumstances surrounding the shooting, identify the perpetrators and ensure their prosecution.

The command assured residents that no effort would be spared in bringing the attackers to justice and appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.

The incident comes amid growing security concerns across parts of the South-West, following recent cases of kidnapping and armed attacks reported in neighbouring states.
