JUST-IN: Gunmen kill 18 in night raid on plateau Village
At least 18 farmers have been killed while several others sustained injuries following a late-night attack on Kawel village in Mushere District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident, which occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, was confirmed on Monday by Christopher Luka, a Bokkos youth leader, who described the assault as sudden and devastating.
According to him, armed attackers stormed the community and opened fire on residents, leaving over 20 people reportedly shot, with 18 confirmed dead.
“A youth leader called around 12 a.m. that gunmen attacked the community and shot over 20 people, so 18 were confirmed dead,” Luka said.
He added that he immediately contacted security operatives stationed in Bokkos, who assured him they had been alerted and were already responding to the situation.
The attack comes just days after another violent incident in the same local government area, where the District Head of Gwande, Saf Samuel Alaket, was killed in an ambush along the Sha District axis near Daffo community. The traditional leader was reportedly returning from a council meeting when he ran into the attackers.
Luka condemned the latest killings as unprovoked and urged security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further escalation of violence in the area.
As of press time, neither the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, SP Alabo Alfred, nor officials of Operation Enduring Peace, had issued an official statement on the attack.
The latest killings add to growing concerns over persistent insecurity in parts of Plateau State, where rural communities have continued to suffer repeated attacks.
