Lagos Govt denies report claiming Sanwo-Olu asked to resign

The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was asked to resign on health grounds, describing the claim as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on April 27, 2026, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said the report, published by Sahara Reporters, was “false in its entirety.”

“Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign—this is another fake news, which has become a pattern of Sahara Reporters. Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health, of sound mind, and is actively discharging his duties,” the statement read.

The government clarified that earlier in the day, the governor received his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, who paid a courtesy visit to formally inform him of his intention to contest for governor.

According to the statement, the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere, in line with established political practice.

While criticising Sahara Reporters for what it described as a history of disinformation, the state government said the clarification became necessary to prevent the public from being misled.

“We would ordinarily ignore such baseless reports, but the need to reassure Lagosians makes this response necessary,” Akosile added.

The government urged members of the public to disregard the report and treat it as fake news.
