Lookman scores as Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0 in Champions League
United conceded inside the opening minute and struggled to recover despite an improved performance under head coach Michael Carrick, who made five changes to his starting line-up.
Ademola Lookman scored as Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, extending the English club’s winless run to five matches.
United conceded inside the opening minute and struggled to recover despite an improved performance under head coach Michael Carrick, who made five changes to his starting line-up.
Atletico took the lead when Alex Baena raced past Diogo Dalot to reach a routine ball played behind the United defence before squaring for Pablo Barrios. Barrios’ effort slipped underneath Ayden Heaven and into the net.
Manchester United had opportunities to equalise before half-time, but Bryan Mbeumo failed to convert two promising chances, while Marcus Rashford could not make contact with a pass from Lisandro Martinez.
United increased their attacking threat after the break, with captain Bruno Fernandes coming close to restoring parity. Fernandes lifted Youri Tielemans’ lofted pass over Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, but his effort drifted wide.
Atletico also threatened to extend their advantage. Alejandro Grimaldo struck the post with a free-kick, while Julian Alvarez failed to capitalise on an opportunity created by Barrios.
United’s hopes of salvaging a result suffered another setback when defender Leny Yoro was sent off for a challenge involving substitute Jonathan David. The dismissal came with Yoro reportedly the last defender between David and the goal.
Atletico eventually sealed the victory in the 79th minute through Nigerian international Ademola Lookman, formerly of Everton.
The result dealt another blow to Manchester United’s European campaign and made them the first English side to suffer defeat in the Champions League this season, according to the report.
For Lookman, the goal added to his contribution for Atletico as the Spanish side secured an important victory on home soil.
