Macron leaves for UNGA in New York as Tinubu remains in Paris, Nigerians react
French President Emmanuel Macron has departed Paris for New York to attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), while Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains in France, sparking reactions on social media.
Macron’s departure comes as world leaders gather in New York for the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, which begins on Tuesday, September 22.
Tinubu, who is currently on an extended working vacation in Europe, will not personally attend this year’s UNGA. Instead, he has delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the global gathering.
Shettima has arrived in New York and is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate, as well as participate in high-level meetings and bilateral engagements with world leaders and development partners.
The Presidency has said Tinubu’s working vacation has been extended by a few days, with the President expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend.
Macron’s departure, alongside Tinubu’s continued stay in Paris, has drawn attention online, with Nigerians discussing the contrasting travel schedules of the two leaders and Tinubu’s absence from the UNGA.
The debate comes amid broader public discussion over the President’s extended stay abroad and Nigeria’s representation at the international gathering. While the Federal Government maintains that Shettima has the full mandate to represent Nigeria, critics have questioned Tinubu’s decision not to attend in person.
