Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called for an independent investigation into the May 14 abduction of pupils and teachers from Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area, urging international human rights and accountability bodies, including agencies within the United Nations system, to scrutinise the incident.

Makinde made the appeal in a statewide broadcast on Monday in Ibadan after receiving the 44 pupils and teachers recently rescued from captivity.

The governor said the circumstances surrounding the abduction were grave and unusual, stressing that an independent investigation would help establish the truth and restore public confidence.

According to him, Nigerians deserve a transparent account of what transpired, including whether there were institutional failures, negligence or collusion.

“The reunion of these children and teachers with their families does not mark the end of this painful chapter.

“It marks the beginning of another responsibility: our collective responsibility to establish the truth,” he said.

Makinde maintained that his call was not politically motivated but aimed at ensuring justice for the victims, reassuring the public and restoring confidence that Nigerian children can attend school without fear.

He assured the rescued teachers, pupils and their families that his administration would continue taking lawful measures to improve security in schools and communities across the state.

While expressing relief over the successful rescue, the governor said the joy was overshadowed by the loss of lives during the incident.

He paid tribute to teacher Joel Adesiyan, who was killed during the attack, as well as Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun, who died while in captivity.

Makinde also honoured security personnel who lost their lives during the rescue operation, including Lt. F. A. Isaac, Adigun Saibu, Isa Saliu, Rafiu Ayuba and an unnamed member of the Oyo State Amotekun Corps and supporting hunters.

He further acknowledged Bamidele Paul, who sustained serious injuries during the operation and is currently receiving treatment.

The governor announced that the state government would strengthen surveillance and oversight of all access routes into and out of the Old Oyo National Park through adjoining local government areas.

Although National Parks fall under the Federal Government’s jurisdiction, he said Oyo State would implement measures to regulate movement, enhance community intelligence and prevent criminal elements from using border communities as escape routes.
