Millions lost as fire engulfs herbal shops in Oyo market
Several shops and goods valued at millions of naira were destroyed after a fire broke out in the early hours of Friday at the popular Bode Market in Ibadan South West Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The blaze, which affected parts of the busy market, left many traders counting their losses as shops and valuable items were consumed by the flames before the fire could be brought under control.
The cause of the fire had not been determined as of the time of filing this report. Authorities were yet to confirm what triggered the incident.
There was also no official statement from the Oyo State Fire Service regarding the incident at press time.
An eyewitness, simply identified herself as Serifat, said, “The blaze caused extensive damage, leaving many traders counting their losses. We have not known the cause of this fire incident.”
It was further gathered that firefighters were promptly deployed to the scene and eventually brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading further.
Very Nigerian reports that Bode Market is one of the largest markets in Ibadan metropolis, and is widely known as a major trading hub for herbs, animal skins and other traditional products.
It serves traders from across the South-West and other parts of Nigeria.
