My friendship with Wike doesn’t mean I endorse Tinubu – Saraki

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has dismissed suggestions that his relationship with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, signals support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Saraki emphasised that his political decisions are transparent and not driven by hidden alliances. He stressed that he does not engage in covert dealings and would openly declare his position if he chose to support any candidate.

Addressing concerns over his association with Wike, Saraki clarified that their relationship is centred on efforts to stabilise the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rather than any alignment with the ruling party.

He acknowledged differences in their political styles but maintained that both share a commitment to ensuring the PDP remains a viable platform for democratic contest.

Saraki’s comments come amid ongoing internal divisions within the PDP, which have persisted since late 2025 and led to the emergence of rival leadership factions. While some party leaders backed a convention that produced Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and members of the National Working Committee, another bloc aligned with Wike set up a caretaker structure to manage party affairs.

Despite the tensions, Saraki called for reconciliation, urging party stakeholders to unite ahead of the upcoming convention and ensure a credible process that would restore confidence among members.

He noted that strengthening internal democracy and legitimacy within the party would be key to positioning the PDP as a competitive force in future elections.
