Nigerian music icon Akiin Shuga dies at 50
Renowned Nigerian musician Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away.
The celebrated founder and leader of the famous Shuga Band died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 50.
In a statement released on Monday, his family expressed deep sorrow, describing him as a “revered music icon, grandmaster, and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”
“Akinloye Tofowomo was more than a musician; he was a custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance,” the family stated.
“Across more than three decades of excellence, on stage and in mentorship, he redefined what it meant to lead a band with grace, mastery, and purpose.”
“To countless admirers at home and abroad, he was both an inspiration and an institution: a true king in his art.”
The family also requested privacy as they mourn his passing, promising to release details of his burial arrangements in due course.
Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga’s story was one of resilience and triumph.
Diagnosed with polio at age five, he defied all odds to become one of Nigeria’s most respected live performers and entertainment entrepreneurs.
He founded the Shuga Band in 1998, starting with performances at Pintos in Ikeja, Lagos. Over the years, it grew into a 14-member ensemble celebrated for its electrifying stage presence at weddings, corporate functions, and high-profile events.
Through his company, Shuga Entertainment, Akiin Shuga set a new standard for live performances in Nigeria, known for discipline, excellence, and creativity.
He also served as the founding president of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), where he advocated for professionalism and better welfare for musicians nationwide.

His legacy as a performer, mentor, and visionary will continue to live on through the Shuga Band and the many lives he inspired.
