Nigerians must pay tax to enjoy development Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stressed the importance of tax payment in national development, declaring that responsible citizenship includes contributing to government revenue through taxes.

Speaking on Friday at the Africa CEO Forum in Rwanda, Tinubu said many citizens desire quality infrastructure and social services but are often unwilling to make the financial contributions needed to sustain them.

According to the President, taxation remains critical to funding roads, hospitals, education, research and other essential sectors of the economy.

“Everyone wants development, but the question is how the government will pay for it,” Tinubu said.

He noted that citizens often demand better highways, healthcare facilities and social welfare programmes while resisting taxation, adding that such expectations were unrealistic.

Tinubu also referenced the lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, saying governments must constantly think ahead and strengthen sources of revenue to prepare for future challenges.

“A citizen who pays taxes is a citizen, whether corporate or individual. If you are not a taxpayer and not exempted, then you are not a citizen,” the President stated.

He maintained that tax compliance was necessary for sustainable growth and improved public services across the country.
