Nine Zamfara lawmakers join ADC after dumping APC

Nine members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing insecurity, alleged injustice and internal disagreements within the party.

The lawmakers had been at odds with Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal for more than two years over what they described as the administration’s inadequate response to the worsening security situation in the state.

Those who defected are Aliyu Ango Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South; Muktar Nasir, representing Kaura Namoda North; Faruk Dosara Musa, representing Maradun I; and Basiru Bello, representing Bungudu West.

Others are Bashir A. Masama, representing Bukkuyum North; Ibrahim T. Tukur, representing Bakura; Nasiru Abdullahi, representing Maru North; Yusuf Muhammad Anka, representing Anka; and Bashar Aliyu, representing Gummi I.

Speaking on behalf of the defecting lawmakers, Kagara said their disagreement with Governor Lawal stemmed from concerns over insecurity and what he described as the administration’s lack of attention to the plight of residents.

According to him, the lawmakers had raised the issue of insecurity on the floor of the House, but their concerns allegedly did not go down well with the governor.

“Because of the lack of security and lack of concern for the people of Zamfara, we raised the issue in the House, which did not go down well with the governor. That was why we had issues with him, which led to our suspension and later defection to the APC,” Kagara said.

Kagara further alleged that their subsequent membership of the APC did not resolve the grievances, claiming that some party leaders worked against them and denied them what they considered a fair hearing.

The Zamfara State Government and the State House of Assembly could not be reached for comments on the allegations.

Attempts to contact the governor’s media aide, Mustafa Kaura, and the Assembly’s media aide, Bello Madaro, were unsuccessful.

The latest defection followed the resignation of five lawmakers from the APC in separate letters dated October 4, 2026.

The lawmakers, representing Maradun I, Maru North, Talata Mafara South, Bukkuyum North and Bakura constituencies, addressed their resignation letters to APC ward chairmen in their respective constituencies.

A former chairman of Bukkuyum Local Government Area, Umar A. Faru, disclosed the development by sharing copies of the resignation letters.

In the letters, the lawmakers said their decisions followed “careful and wide consultations” with stakeholders.

Dosara, in his resignation letter, said the APC had been weakened by internal divisions and uncertainty.

He cited what he described as “lack of unity among the party stakeholders in the state, deception, uncertainties, injustice and inability of the government to overcome the security situation” in his constituency and the state.

He also accused the governor of what he termed a “nonchalant attitude” and poor leadership.

Similarly, Abdullahi, representing Maru North Constituency, cited insecurity, alleged injustice and what he described as poor governance as reasons for his resignation.

“I hereby resign my membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect,” he stated in the letter.

Kagara, who represents Talata Mafara South Constituency, also cited the government’s alleged inability to address insecurity as one of his reasons for leaving the APC.

Masama of Bukkuyum North and Tukur of Bakura gave similar reasons for their departure.

Tukur cited “lack of unity among the party stakeholders in the state, deception, uncertainties, injustice and inability of the government to overcome security situation” as reasons for his resignation.

The development further underscores the political realignment taking place in Zamfara ahead of the 2027 general election.
