NUJ FCT, NDPC join forces to boost cybersecurity for Journalists

In a decisive step to protect journalists against rising digital risks, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has formalized a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).

The agreement was signed during a high-level courtesy visit on Wednesday, led by NUJ FCT Chairman Comrade Grace Ike, who met with NDPC leadership to seek support in training journalists on data protection, ethical reporting, and safeguarding public trust.

“In today’s world, data is power… as journalists, we sit at the intersection of information and public trust,” Ike emphasized, noting the increasing sophistication of cyber threats, digital surveillance, and misinformation.

The partnership will focus on capacity building for journalists across the FCT and beyond, ensuring they are fully conversant with Nigeria’s data protection laws, equipped to handle personal and sensitive information responsibly, and trained to prevent digital breaches and cyber intrusions. Ike stressed, “A journalist who does not understand data protection in this era is vulnerable, and a vulnerable journalist weakens democracy.”

NDPC’s National Commissioner/CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, lauded the initiative, highlighting the Commission’s ongoing awareness campaigns and engagements with journalists in Lagos and Abuja during National Privacy Week. He pledged to organize a one-day induction training for NUJ FCT journalists and provide Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA) vouchers and certification slots as part of the collaboration.

Dr. Olatunji noted that since 2019, the NDPC has generated ₦16.2 billion in revenue—₦7.2 billion remitted to the Federal Government—hosted delegations from eight countries, and conducted large-scale privacy trainings. He added that follow-up meetings will develop a blueprint for rural penetration and expanded awareness.

The partnership aims to fortify media practitioners, enhance data governance, and ensure that responsible journalism can thrive in a safer digital environment.
