Onyedika brace fires Super Eagles to 3–1 win over Uganda, seal perfect AFCON group run
Raphael Onyedika scored twice as a much-changed Super Eagles side of Nigeria defeated Uganda 3–1 on Tuesday to conclude the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a perfect record.
The Club Brugge midfielder struck in quick succession in the 62nd and 67th minutes at the Stade de Fes to put the game beyond Uganda, after Paul Onuachu had earlier handed Nigeria the lead in the 28th minute.
Nigeria dominated large spells of the encounter despite making several changes to the starting line-up, with head coach rotating his squad following qualification from the group after earlier victories over Tanzania and Tunisia.
Onuachu opened the scoring midway through the first half, calmly finishing from close range after sustained pressure from the Super Eagles. Uganda pulled a goal back to raise hopes of a comeback, but Onyedika’s brace in the second half extinguished any resistance from the East Africans.
The victory ensured Nigeria finished the group phase with maximum nine points from three matches, scoring freely and conceding minimally, further underlining their status as one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the knockout stages as they continue their quest for a fourth AFCON title.
