PDP schedules screening for Jonathan as lone presidential aspirant
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki has scheduled the screening of former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s sole presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 elections.
The screening exercise is expected to hold on Tuesday, with a 14-member committee constituted by the party to conduct the process.
Among those named to serve on the committee are former Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi.
Other members include Chief Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Dr. Abdul Bulama, Dr. Esther Uduehi, Edo PDP Chairman Tony Aziegbemi, Dr. Sunday Solarium, and Chief Anicho Okoro, who will serve as administrative secretary.
Although the party’s official statement only referred to “a lone presidential aspirant,” party sources confirmed that the aspirant is former President Jonathan.
The development comes days after the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, disclosed that Jonathan had completed his membership registration with the party during its fresh digital registration exercise directed by INEC.
The faction, reportedly backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, also announced plans to screen 748 House of Representatives aspirants, 198 senatorial aspirants, 112 governorship aspirants, and over 2,000 state assembly aspirants across the country.
According to the party, the nationwide screening exercise is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in line with its timetable for the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Eze Madumere, has declared his intention to secure victory for the PDP in the Owerri Senatorial District race.
Madumere said he possesses the political reach, experience, and grassroots support needed to restore visibility and inclusiveness to Owerri zone.
“The people know me. They know my track records. They know what I stand for, which represents equity and justice,” he stated, expressing confidence that the PDP would emerge victorious in the senatorial contest.
