Police to resume nationwide enforcement of tinted glass permit Jan 2

Published

The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will resume nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass permit regulation from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns linked to the misuse of unauthorised tinted vehicle glass.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, who said the decision followed a review of emerging security threats across the country.

According to the police, the renewed enforcement is aimed at protecting lives and property, as criminal elements have increasingly exploited vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass to conceal their identities while carrying out crimes.

The Force clarified that there is no existing court order restraining it from enforcing the law on tinted vehicle glass, noting that the decision is being taken pending the final determination of a related matter currently before the courts.

Enforcement of the regulation had earlier been suspended to allow for transparency and to give motorists sufficient time to regularise their documents and complete the permit application process without pressure.

However, the police said recent developments have made it imperative to act.

“Recent trends reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” the statement said.

The Force explained that such vehicles have been linked to offences including armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes, with criminals taking advantage of reduced visibility to evade identification.

The police stressed that the decision to resume enforcement is a proactive step to curb insecurity and safeguard communities across the country.

“In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities,” the statement added.

Motorists were advised to ensure full compliance with the tinted glass permit requirements ahead of the January 2, 2026 enforcement date to avoid sanctions.
