Protesters block Ondo highway over rising gunmen attacks

Tension gripped Ayede Ogbese community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday morning as youths blocked the Akure-Owo-Benin highway to protest a surge in killings and abductions.

The demonstration followed the murder of a young man, Ben Daniels, on Monday night. Daniels was reportedly attacked while riding a motorcycle with one James Unekwu along Agunla Farm Road. Unekwu escaped, but Daniels’ body was later found along the road.

The protest highlights a growing pattern of violence in the area. On February 18, gunmen killed Kehinde Jacob Faledon, the traditional ruler of Agamo community, and days later, a couple was abducted in Ilu-Abo community, intensifying fears among residents. During the protest, youths barricaded the highway and carried placards reading “Stop the killing of innocent souls,” “Justice must be served,” and “We are tired of dying in silence,” disrupting traffic as commuters sought alternative routes.

The demonstrators accused the Ondo State Government of neglecting their community and alleged that security operatives had failed to respond effectively to the wave of criminal activities. Security personnel were deployed to monitor the situation as residents called for urgent intervention to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed in the area.
