Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday arrived in Zamfara State to officially welcome Governor Dauda Lawal into the All Progressives Congress (APC) following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was scheduled to receive members of the governor’s cabinet alongside thousands of supporters into the APC at a grand event held at the Gusau Trade Fair Complex.

The statement noted that the Vice President was received by Governor Dauda Lawal and several state governors, including Umar Namadi of Jigawa, Uba Sani of Kaduna, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, and Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa. Also present were Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano, and Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State.

Other top political figures in attendance included the Deputy Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the APC National Chairman, and the Chairman of the APC Governors Forum, Hope Uzodinma, alongside ministers, party leaders, and other dignitaries.

Governor Lawal had earlier defected from the PDP to the APC on March 9, a move said to have followed wide consultations with political stakeholders, leaders, elders, and supporters across Zamfara State.

At the time, the PDP in Zamfara confirmed the development in a statement, saying, “The Government and PDP family of Zamfara State wish to formally inform the general public of an important political development following extensive consultations with stakeholders, political leaders, elders, and supporters across the state.

“After careful consideration, and in the overriding interest of stability, progress, and the sustainable development of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, has decided to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.”
