Tension escalates as thugs attack NDC secretariat in Edo, destroy properties
The secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State has reportedly been attacked by suspected thugs, with property destroyed during the incident.
The attack, reported on Wednesday, comes barely a week after violence against supporters of the party in Enugu State allegedly left one member dead.
The Enugu State chapter of the NDC had confirmed the death of Nworie Christopher, who was reportedly shot during an attack on the party’s campaign office in the Government Reserved Area of Enugu.
Christopher, a native of Affa in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, reportedly died from gunshot injuries sustained during the October 10, 2026, incident.
According to the party, he was among its supporters allegedly attacked by armed men during a gathering at the campaign office of its governorship candidate, Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa.
No death was reported in the latest incident in Edo State as of the time this report was filed. However, footage circulating online showed damage to property at the NDC secretariat.
The attack has raised fresh concerns about the safety of political party members and the growing tension surrounding political activities ahead of the 2027 general election.
Civil society organisations and political commentators have warned that repeated attacks on party offices could threaten political participation and undermine confidence in the electoral process if the incidents are not properly investigated and those responsible brought to justice.
In a video showing the vandalised secretariat, a woman accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of being responsible for the attack. However, the allegation had not been independently established in the account available at the time of filing this report.
“The last one happened in Enugu, where one person died. Now they have brought it to Edo. APC, your end is here,” the woman said.
There was no information in the report confirming whether the police had made any arrests or issued an official statement on the Edo incident.
