Tinubu’s effort to secure Trump’s support for re-election has failed – Atiku’s lobbying firm claim

A United States-based policy advisory and lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has claimed that efforts by the Nigerian Presidency to secure the support of US President Donald Trump for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid have failed.

The firm made the claim in a post on its verified X handle on Tuesday, alleging that Tinubu’s planned meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly would no longer take place.

Von Batten-Montague-York also claimed that some of Tinubu’s special advisers were unhappy with the firm over what it described as its role in undermining an alleged $9 million lobbying campaign aimed at influencing the Trump administration’s position towards the Nigerian president.

“We have learned that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, his Special Adviser, Sunday Dare and their supporters are deeply unhappy with us, particularly with our founder, Dr. Von Batten,” the firm said.

The firm claimed that the Presidency had spent millions of dollars and significant time attempting to shape Washington’s perception of Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election.

It further alleged that the reported effort to secure Trump’s backing for Tinubu had failed.

“President Tinubu’s planned UN meeting with President Trump is dead. The effort to secure President Trump’s support for Tinubu has failed. The pushed White House meeting is not going to happen. The effort to secure US support for Tinubu’s presidential campaign has failed,” it stated.

The lobbying firm also accused the Presidency of allegedly spreading false claims about its activities and its founder following the reported failure of the lobbying effort.

“You spent millions of dollars and countless hours trying to shape Washington’s perception of President Tinubu. If your response to failure is to invent false stories about our work and Dr. Von Batten, then you have learned nothing from that failure,” it said.

The firm concluded by contrasting its status as a private lobbying organisation with the Nigerian government.

“We are just a lobbying firm. You are the Federal Government of Nigeria. Show some dignity when you lose,” it added.

The claims by Von Batten-Montague-York have not been independently verified, and neither the Presidency nor the White House was quoted in the statement confirming that the alleged meeting between Tinubu and Trump had been cancelled.
