Tunde Ayeni, ex-Skye Bank boss standing fraud trial, allegedly robbed of N120m wedding ring and wristwatch inside Kuje prison

Former Chairman of Skye Bank Plc, Tunde Ayeni, was allegedly robbed of his wedding ring and a luxury wristwatch reportedly valued at over ₦120 million during a raid at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

According to reports, the operation was allegedly carried out by senior officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service led by the Deputy Controller-General of Operations alongside officers attached to the facility.

Sources within the correctional centre claimed that suspended former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, also allegedly lost about ₦2 million during the same operation.

Insiders alleged that officials stormed the prison yard accompanied by operatives with Department of State Services dogs while dressed in bulletproof vests, causing panic among inmates.

“One of the former chairmen of Skye Bank in Kuje prison was searched and robbed of his wedding ring and wristwatch worth over ₦120 million by officers in charge of Kuje prison,” a source alleged.

Another source claimed that Ayeni was considering filing a formal petition against the officers allegedly involved in the incident.

The operation was reportedly described by prison authorities as a routine search exercise within the custodial facility. However, sources alleged that valuables and cash belonging to some inmates were confiscated without proper documentation.

Ayeni, a prominent businessman and former banking executive, is currently facing trial over alleged fraud involving about ₦15.7 billion. He was recently granted bail of ₦200 million by an Abuja High Court under strict conditions, including federal civil servant sureties and a ₦15 billion bank guarantee.

Meanwhile, Abba Kyari remains in custody while facing trial over allegations linked to drug trafficking and related offences.

The Kuje Correctional Centre has repeatedly faced scrutiny over security controversies, including previous jailbreak incidents and allegations involving preferential treatment and abuse connected to high-profile detainees.
