UEFA slams Real Madrid with $17,000 fine over supporter’s Nazi salute

UEFA has fined Real Madrid €15,000 ($17,000) after one of the club’s supporters performed a Nazi salute before a recent UEFA Champions League match.

In addition to the fine, UEFA’s disciplinary board also ordered a partial closure of 500 seats at Real Madrid’s stadium. However, the closure will only take effect if a similar incident happens again within a one-year probation period.

UEFA said the punishment followed “racist and/or discriminatory behaviour of its supporters” during the second leg of the club’s play-off round victory over Benfica on February 25.

The European football governing body announced the decision in an official statement released on Friday.

Real ejected a supporter caught on camera performing a Nazi salute in the stands before the match began.

The first leg of the tie was marred by an incident of alleged racism aimed at Real winger Vinicius Junior by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, who denies it.

Madrid progressed to the last 16 where they will face Premier League side Manchester City.
