US issues global caution alert to citizens amid Iran strikes — advisory applies to Americans in Nigeria

The United States Government has issued a global security alert for its citizens in Nigeria and worldwide following escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The advisory, released by the US State Department on Sunday, urges Americans to remain vigilant in the wake of recent military operations targeting Iran. It warns that shifting security developments could disrupt travel plans and pose safety risks, including potential air travel interruptions.

“Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide and especially in the Middle East should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the advisory stated. “They may experience travel disruptions due to periodic airspace closures. The Department of State advises Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution.”

The alert also recommended that US nationals register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive up-to-date security information and monitor the “U.S. Department of State Security Updates for US Citizens” WhatsApp channel for further advisories.

The warning comes after coordinated strikes by US and Israeli forces on Iranian targets, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the chief of staff of the armed forces, Abdolrahim Mousavi. Iranian authorities estimate that the strikes have killed over 200 people and injured more than 700, including senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Following the attacks, President Donald Trump stated that Iran’s leadership had agreed to return to negotiations with the United States, adding that Tehran initiated contact for talks and he had accepted the proposal.

The situation remains volatile, and US citizens are advised to maintain heightened situational awareness and comply with all official travel and safety guidance.
