Vigilantes torture Corps Member to death in Benue
A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ben Agir Une, has been beaten to death by members of a community vigilante group in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State after he was allegedly mistaken for a motorcycle thief.
The Chairman of Buruku LGA, Raymond Aondoakura, confirmed the incident in Makurdi on Thursday, describing the killing as tragic and unacceptable.
He said the incident occurred between 11pm and 12am on Sunday at Mbajor settlement, near the council secretariat.
According to him, the deceased, Une, was an indigene of Tongov in Katsina-Ala LGA and was serving in Gombe State under the NYSC scheme.
Aondoakura explained that vigilante members on night patrol had apprehended the corps member on suspicion of being a motorcycle snatcher.
He said the victim was allegedly assaulted before he could identify himself or present his NYSC identification card.
“From what I gathered, they said they caught him and suspected that he was a bike snatcher. Before he could explain himself and present his identification card, one of the leaders started beating him,” the chairman said.
He further disclosed that Une was beaten into a coma and later confirmed dead at a hospital where he was rushed.
The council chairman said all those involved in the incident have been arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution.
“We have arrested all of them and handed them to the police for arraignment. We confirmed that the deceased was a serving corps member,” he added.
Aondoakura also announced the immediate suspension of vigilante operations in the area pending further regulation of their activities.
Residents said the deceased was due to complete his national service next month before his untimely death.
Police spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, had yet to respond to inquiries at the time of filing this report.
