What I discussed with President Tinubu in Aso Rock – Gov Makinde speaks
“The President is the President of Nigeria, not the President of the APC. We discussed governance issues. That was the essence of the visit,” Gov Makinde said.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, insisting that the engagement was strictly about governance and not politics.
The visit comes amid heightened political manoeuvrings and consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, but Makinde was quick to play down any political significance attached to the meeting.
Speaking with journalists after the closed-door discussion, the governor said he arrived at the Aso Rock Villa around 3:30 p.m. to deliberate on issues affecting governance and national development.
Makinde, a leading figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said President Tinubu remains the President of all Nigerians, irrespective of party affiliation.
“The President is the President of Nigeria, not the President of the APC. We discussed governance issues. That was the essence of the visit,” he said.
Addressing speculations about a possible defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Makinde dismissed the idea, stressing that he remains committed to the PDP despite recent defections by some party heavyweights.
“I’m comfortable in the PDP,” the governor said. “There are situations where the country needs a bipartisan approach. It shouldn’t always be APC talking alone or PDP talking alone. What matters is doing what is best in the interest of Nigeria.”
Makinde’s remarks come at a time when political alignments are shifting, with several opposition figures crossing over to the APC, fuelling speculation about further realignments ahead of the next election cycle.
