When Presidency rotates to Southeast, it cannot be an Anambra man – Umahi shades Obi
Minister of Works David Umahi has stirred debate over the prospect of the South-East producing Nigeria’s next president, saying that if the presidency rotates to the region, the candidate should come from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia or Enugu rather than Anambra State.
Umahi made the remarks during an interview with ARISE News journalist Ojy Okpe, arguing that the South-East should consider other states in the region, given that former President Nnamdi Azikiwe was from Anambra.
His comments come as Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, is pursuing his political ambition ahead of the 2027 general election.
Umahi, who is also from the South-East, has been a vocal critic of Obi.
His latest remarks have therefore drawn attention to the debate over which state should produce a presidential candidate if the presidency eventually rotates to the region.
However, the question of which state should produce a candidate remains a matter of political debate, and Umahi’s position does not necessarily represent the views of all political leaders or residents of the South-East.
