Wike mocks ‘corn and groundnut’ campaign style by opposition after APC victory
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the outcome of the just-concluded FCT Area Council elections has exposed what he described as the hypocrisy of politicians who engage in symbolic roadside gestures to win public sympathy.
Wike made the remarks on Sunday after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, while reacting to the results of the polls in the nation’s capital.
According to the minister, the election outcome showed that residents of the FCT could not be swayed by what he termed “deceptive campaign tactics,” including politicians buying corn and groundnuts from roadside vendors as publicity stunts.
“The residents of FCT demonstrated that they cannot be deceived by emergency democrats, who have chosen not to see anything good in our country and its government,” Wike said.
He added that the results had clarified the political landscape in the FCT, arguing that Nigerians now know which party represents the ruling government and which constitutes the “real opposition.”
The All Progressives Congress (APC) won five out of the six Area Councils in the election, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured one seat.
The results have sparked fresh political debate in the capital, with party loyalists interpreting the outcome as a reflection of public confidence in their respective platforms.
