‘You will pay taxes beyond your capacity in 2027 if Tinubu is reelected’ – Sen. Kingibe warns Nigerians
Senator Ireti Kingibe has raised concerns over Nigeria’s tax policy while addressing voters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as she seeks re-election to the Senate in 2027 on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a recent video, Kingibe claimed that Nigerians could face a heavier tax burden, alleging that a tax law passed by the National Assembly would be implemented after the 2027 general election.
“Nigerians are not aware that a tax law has been passed, which requires everyone to pay 25% of their earnings as tax. The National Assembly has already passed this law, and it will swing into action after the election,” she said.
The senator added: “They passed the policy, but fear won’t let them implement it until after the elections.”
Kingibe’s remarks have brought the potential impact and timing of tax policy implementation into focus ahead of the next general election.
However, her claim that every Nigerian would be required to pay 25 per cent of their earnings needs to be assessed against the specific provisions of the relevant tax legislation. The applicable tax liability depends on the law, the type of income and the circumstances of the taxpayer.
As political activities gather momentum ahead of 2027, taxation and the cost of living are likely to remain important subjects of public debate, particularly among voters concerned about the effects of government policies on their finances.
