Zamfara Assembly suspends two LG Chairmen over alleged financial misconduct

The Zamfara State House of Assembly has ordered the suspension of Mannir Mu’azu Haidara and Umar A. Faru, chairmen of Kaura Namoda and Bukkuyum local government areas, following allegations of financial irregularities.

The decision came during a plenary session on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, after lawmakers reviewed a report on the financial operations of the state’s 14 local government councils for the 2025 fiscal year.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Bello Madaro Kurya, the report was presented by Deputy Speaker Hon. Adamu Aliyu Gumm, who is also Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

According to the statement, the committee’s findings prompted the recommendation to suspend the two chairmen due to their failure to respond to several invitations issued to them. The invitations were intended to allow them to clarify issues surrounding the use of funds in their respective councils.

The Assembly, presided over by Speaker Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, unanimously approved the recommendation, directing that the suspension take immediate effect pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

The affected chairmen have also been instructed to transfer administrative responsibilities to their vice chairmen without delay.

The lawmakers cited non-compliance with legislative summons, alongside concerns over accountability and transparency, as reasons for the disciplinary measure.

The House further adopted the full report on the investigation into the 2025 financial activities of all 14 local government areas and forwarded its resolutions to the executive arm for implementation.
