1.4 million corps members to participate in 2027 elections — INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission) has announced plans to mobilise over 1.4 million ad hoc staff, largely drawn from the National Youth Service Corps (National Youth Service Corps), for the 2027 general elections.

The Chairman of INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, made the disclosure on Monday during a strategic courtesy visit to the NYSC headquarters in Abuja, where he led national commissioners and senior officials of the commission.

Amupitan described corps members as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s electoral process since 1999, noting that they have consistently served as presiding officers and registration area officers across polling units nationwide.

He revealed that INEC deployed about 1.2 million ad hoc staff during the 2023 general elections, with corps members and student volunteers accounting for more than 70 per cent of the workforce.

For the 2027 polls, he said the commission would require 707,384 corps members for the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, and another 707,384 for the Governorship and State Assembly elections fixed for February 6, 2027.

Additional personnel, he added, would be needed for off-cycle governorship elections and bye-elections in several states including Rivers, Kano, Enugu, Ondo, and others.

Amupitan praised corps members for their discipline, neutrality, and digital competence, especially in the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which he said has strengthened election integrity.

He also assured that INEC would improve welfare, insurance, and security arrangements for corps members involved in election duties.

In response, NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu commended the long-standing partnership between both institutions, describing corps members as reliable and patriotic manpower essential to credible elections.

He reaffirmed the scheme’s commitment to supporting INEC, while also calling for improved welfare and compensation packages to motivate corps members deployed for electoral assignments.

The NYSC boss further noted that the emergence of digitally skilled corps members would enhance efficiency in future elections as Nigeria continues to adopt more technology-driven electoral processes.
