2027: Amaechi storm Nasarawa, meets ‘Tinubu Must Go’ protesters

Vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has arrived in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, where he encountered protesters displaying the message, “Tinubu Must Go.”

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, was in Lafia as part of his political engagements ahead of the 2027 general election.

The appearance of the protesters comes amid increased political activity ahead of the 2027 polls, with the slogan “Tinubu Must Go” being used by groups opposed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration.

The development also comes days after ADC presidential candidate and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar criticised the arrest and arraignment of five men in Maiduguri, Borno State, over T-shirts bearing the same inscription.

Atiku called for the release of the men, arguing that political expression should not attract criminal prosecution.

In a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku said Nigerians should be able to express dissatisfaction with government policies.

The former Vice-President referenced Tinubu’s activities while in opposition, particularly his criticism of policies introduced by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

«“Tinubu opposed Jonathan’s fuel policy in the streets. Nigerians are living with the consequences of Tinubu’s fuel policy in their homes,” Atiku said.»

He also questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the five men, saying political criticism should be permissible within a democratic system.

«“‘Tinubu Must Go’ is a demand for political change. It is not a weapon, a threat or a crime.”»

Five Men Arraigned in Maiduguri

The Borno State Police Command arrested and arraigned five men over allegations connected to the printing and wearing of T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go.”

The defendants were identified as Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21.

According to a First Information Report dated September 29, 2026, the incident allegedly occurred on September 25 at about 11am around the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri.

The police accused the defendants of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace and thuggery, under Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.

The five men pleaded not guilty when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Court I in Maiduguri, while their lawyer subsequently filed an application seeking bail.

The court fixed October 6, 2026, for ruling on the bail application and October 26 for the substantive case.

The Borno State Police Command has, however, said the men were not arrested simply because they were wearing the T-shirts. According to the police, the arrests followed allegations of inciting disturbance, breach of public peace, thuggery and possession of suspected illicit drugs.

Amaechi’s appearance in Lafia and the presence of protesters displaying the same slogan come as political parties and their candidates intensify activities ahead of the 2027 general election.
