Six opposition political parties have held consultations with five presidential candidates as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation and explore a coordinated approach ahead of the 2027 general election.

The consultations, which took place at different times over the past two weeks, involved the national chairmen and national secretaries of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Salihu Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties, the engagements involved Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Seyi Makinde of the APM, Peter Obi of the NDC, Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and Donald Duke of the PRP.

The statement said the consultations were held in furtherance of resolutions reached at the G100 opposition summit, which called for sustained dialogue, stronger cooperation and a coordinated approach among opposition parties.

It added that the engagements were intended to strengthen multiparty democracy and advance the interests of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The consultations represent a practical step towards giving effect to those resolutions,” the statement said.

“They provide an opportunity for party leaders and presidential candidates to deliberate on the framework for opposition cooperation, identify areas of common ground and consider the steps necessary to advance a shared democratic agenda ahead of 2027.”

The coalition said the discussions highlighted the importance of political leaders working across party lines to address Nigeria’s challenges and protect the credibility of elections.

It also maintained that Nigerians deserved political leaders who would place the country’s future and citizens’ welfare above narrow interests.

According to the statement, the consultations were still ongoing, with further engagements expected to build on the G100 resolutions and strengthen cooperation among the participating parties.

“Nigerians will be informed of substantive decisions and agreed next steps as the deliberations progress,” the statement added.

Opposition Parties Renew Calls for Cooperation

The latest consultations follow earlier calls for opposition parties to unite ahead of the 2027 general election.

In August, Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed called on opposition parties to work together to remove President Bola Tinubu from power in the 2027 elections.

Baba-Ahmed made the call at an opposition political parties’ summit organised by G100 in Abuja, where he argued that defeating Tinubu would require broad support from Nigerians.

The latest engagements signal continued efforts by opposition leaders to identify areas of agreement and explore possible forms of cooperation ahead of the next presidential election.

However, the coalition has yet to announce any formal agreement among the parties or disclose specific decisions arising from the consultations.
