2027: Step down if you are not working for Tinubu – Deji Adeyanju dares Obi, Kwankwaso
Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has challenged the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if they want to dispel allegations that they are working to secure President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
Adeyanju made the remark in a post on X, arguing that the two opposition figures would have to step aside for him to believe they were no longer working in Tinubu’s interest.
“If Obi and Kwankwaso step down from the race, I will believe they are no longer working for President Tinubu like they did in 2023,” he wrote.
The human rights lawyer has repeatedly accused Obi and Kwankwaso of working in Tinubu’s interest ahead of the 2027 general election. He has also argued that votes for the duo would ultimately benefit the incumbent president, urging Nigerians not to support them.
Adeyanju’s comments remain allegations and do not, on their own, establish that either opposition politician is working for Tinubu.
Amid the criticism, Kwankwaso has maintained that Obi poses a political challenge to Tinubu, claiming that the former Anambra State governor’s popularity in southern Nigeria has become a concern for the President.
Kwankwaso said Obi had considerable support in the South and claimed that efforts were underway to mobilise voters in northern Nigeria behind the NDC candidate.
He further alleged that Tinubu was concerned about Obi’s personality and level of popularity.
In a related development, Kwankwaso disclosed that he had appealed to Fulani groups to persuade former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, to withdraw from the presidential contest.
The remarks come amid political manoeuvring and competing claims among opposition figures as parties and their candidates prepare for the 2027 general election.
