2027: Lagos leads as INEC unveils Top 10 States with highest number of voters
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that Lagos State has the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figures on Tuesday during the commission’s World Press Conference in Abuja as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
According to Amupitan, Lagos has 7,488,633 registered voters, placing it ahead of Kano State, which has 6,000,570 registered voters.
Kaduna State ranks third with 4,000,640 registered voters, while Katsina State is fourth with 3,876,051.
Oyo State occupies the fifth position with 3,588,111 registered voters, followed by Delta State with 3,525,988.
Rivers State has 3,000,734 registered voters, while Benue State has 3,057,225.
Ogun State ranks ninth with 3,037,981 registered voters, while Bauchi State completes the top 10 with 3,000,047 registered voters.
Nigeria’s voter register exceeds 103 million
The INEC chairman also confirmed that Nigeria’s National Register of Voters has risen to more than 103 million following the completion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and final biometric cleanup.
Amupitan disclosed the figure on Monday at a one-day strategic workshop for editors organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors in collaboration with INEC in Abuja.
He said the three phases of the CVR exercise produced 10,772,421 new registrations, subject to verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
He said the commission had also completed the public display of the Preliminary Register, allowing eligible Nigerians to raise claims and objections, as well as the final ABIS cleanup.
“Following the conclusion of our three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which captured over 10.6 million new applicants, and the completion of the public display of the Preliminary Register for claims and objections, our Voter Register Department has completed the final Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) cleanup. Nigeria’s National Register of Voters is now over 103 million,” Amupitan said.
The latest figures come as INEC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the commission expected to continue updating stakeholders on voter registration, candidate nominations, election logistics and other aspects of the electoral process.
