The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has selected Alhaji Muhammad Sani Abacha, son of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, as its candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

Abacha emerged at an expanded state executive committee meeting held in Kano on Wednesday, following the withdrawal of the party’s earlier governorship candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalha.

The meeting featured an affirmation and replacement primary conducted to formally fill the vacancy created by Dalha’s withdrawal.

Kano PDP Chairman, Dr Bello Gambo Bichi, said the exercise was conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution and relevant electoral laws.

According to Bichi, Bello Dalha had previously won the party’s governorship primary but subsequently withdrew after consultations involving PDP stakeholders in Kano and Abuja.

“The law says that as a result of withdrawal, a replacement primary must be held. That is what brought us here today. We have affirmed Muhammad Sani Abacha as the gubernatorial candidate of our great party in Kano State,” Bichi said.

The affirmation was followed by the replacement primary, during which Abacha was formally declared the winner by the chairman of the electoral panel, Dr Abba Abdullahi.

Abdullahi said the exercise complied with the PDP’s guidelines and relevant electoral regulations, adding that Abacha satisfied the requirements for nomination.

In a related development, the Kano PDP leadership also allocated the deputy governorship slot to the group led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as part of efforts to reconcile the different factions within the party.

The party subsequently named Alhaji Yusuf Ado Kibiya, a former factional chairman and former Commissioner for Land and Agriculture, as the deputy governorship candidate.

Bichi said the decision followed consultations among the various groups in the party as part of efforts to resolve internal disagreements.

“As part of the reconciliation process, we also replaced some of our National Assembly and State Assembly candidates. Representatives of INEC were present and witnessed the entire exercise,” he said.

The latest development formally places Muhammad Sani Abacha at the centre of the PDP’s preparations for the 2027 Kano governorship election, following the withdrawal of the party’s earlier candidate.
