2027: Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket, a zero-zero ticket for Nigerians

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has dismissed the debate over a Muslim-Muslim ticket ahead of the 2027 presidential election, insisting that Nigerians are more concerned about justice and competent leadership than religious identity.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday, Adebayo argued that President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima’s administration should not be judged by religion but by its ability to deliver justice and good governance.

According to him, the Tinubu-Shettima ticket is better described as a “zero-zero ticket” rather than a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“There is nothing like the Muslim-Muslim ticket. Even when the issue came up four years ago, I said if anyone was expecting a Muslim-Muslim ticket in President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, they would be lucky to have even one Muslim out of the two.

“From the point of view of Muslims in Nigeria, it is a zero-zero ticket because, in Islam, what is expected of a leader is not religion but justice,” he said.

Adebayo explained that Islamic jurisprudence places greater emphasis on competence, fairness and justice than on a leader’s religious affiliation.

“The reason Muslims participate in politics is to build a just society. Islam teaches that public office should be given only to those who are fit for the responsibility, not based on religious identity, favouritism or expectations of personal reward,” he stated.

He further described the Muslim-Muslim ticket narrative as a political strategy designed to manipulate public sentiment.

“The whole concept from the beginning was created to defraud Nigerians by exploiting religious sentiments. What the North and indeed all Nigerians are looking for is a righteous leader, regardless of religion,” Adebayo added.

The SDP flag bearer also claimed that many of those who championed the Muslim-Muslim ticket were now demanding justice under the current administration.

He cited former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as an example.

“One of the strongest proponents of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, El-Rufai, and his family are now crying for justice. That is the biggest irony.

“If someone who strongly promoted the Muslim-Muslim ticket cannot get justice, then it shows that Nigerians are not interested in such a narrative. What they want is good leadership and justice,” he said.
