2027: ‘You Can’t Change a Winning Team’: Rivers Assembly ask Tinubu to run again

The Rivers State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek re-election in 2027, describing his leadership as steady, impactful, and beneficial to the state.

The resolution followed a motion moved by the House Leader, Major Jack, who represents Akuku-Toru I Constituency.

Jack said the assembly must commend Tinubu for “steering the ship of the nation in the right direction” and formally request that he contest again due to what he described as the president’s “leadership and love for Rivers State.”

The motion was co-sponsored by at least 15 lawmakers.

Every legislator who spoke during plenary backed the call.

Dumle Maol, representing Gokana Constituency, said Tinubu has appointed six persons from his constituency into federal positions, adding that his constituents insisted he support the motion.

According to him, the president “deserves a second term” because “you cannot change a winning team.”

Deputy House Leader Linda Somiari-Stewart also endorsed the motion, noting that confidence in Tinubu’s administration is essential at a time the country requires “stability, freedom, and leadership.”

Speaker Martins Amaewhule aligned with the lawmakers, stressing that the assembly will support, and not criticise  the Tinubu administration.

He urged citizens to assist security agencies with information to combat crime, insisting that the house will continue to “pray for the president’s health, strength, and wisdom” rather than “join those demarketing the country.”

After a voice vote, the motion was adopted.

The development comes months after Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18 over the deepening political crisis.

The move led to the temporary suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state assembly for six months, with retired naval chief Ibok-Ete Ibas appointed as sole administrator. The president lifted the emergency rule on September 17, 2025.
